About 200 people were rescued from an unregistered rehabilitation centre in South Africa's Mpumalanga province, police said.

Police said in a statement they had arrested two people and were investigating allegations of kidnapping and breaches of health and safety regulations at the centre, while 14 people found there were taken for medical treatment.

Local media reported that some of those found had been chained and denied food. Police did not confirm those reports on the condition of people found at the facility.

The centre was operating from a church in Siyabuswa, in the Waterval B area, according to local media. Its operators initially told officials that about 60 people were accommodated there, but inspectors found about 200 people, including around 30 women. Police said many of those found were from townships in Johannesburg and Rustenburg, although the information was still being investigated.
