PARIS: Demonstrations across France on Saturday, October 17, over rising living costs, education provision and public services were accompanied by violent confrontations in several cities. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said about 1,200 people had been arrested and 150 police officers injured.

Meeting security personnel in Paris, Lecornu expressed concern over the intensity of the violence and said it was fortunate that the number of serious casualties had not been higher. He condemned those responsible for violent incidents and accused elements of the far left of encouraging them. These were the prime minister's political allegations; many demonstrators protested peacefully.

France's Interior Ministry estimated nationwide turnout at around 550,000, while the CGT trade union put the number at approximately 800,000. The differing figures are attributed to their respective sources.

In Paris and other cities, some protesters clashed with police. Reports described property damage, fires and vandalism. Police used tear gas and water cannon at certain locations.

The rising cost of living and inadequate facilities in public schools were among the reasons for the demonstrations. Questions were also raised about police use of force. The government said the right to peaceful protest remained protected but violence and looting were unacceptable.
