Lahore's kite flyers will have to wait a few more weeks. The Punjab government has rescheduled Basant 2027 for a second time, with the provincial cabinet approving March 12, 13 and 14 as the new festival dates, according to The Express Tribune.
Ten days cut to three
The decision reverses Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's earlier announcement of a 10-day celebration from January 29 to February 7, with a break on February 5 for Kashmir Day. She had framed the extended festival as a way to promote Punjab's cultural heritage and Lahore's traditional identity.
Citing sources, the paper said Lahore Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Muhammad Ali Ijaz sent a summary proposing new dates to the Punjab Home Department, which forwarded it to the cabinet for approval. The report did not give an official reason for the change.
Strict rules stay in place
Preparations continue under a regulatory framework covering kite flying, the making and sale of kites, and the transport and use of string. The district administration says kite flying will be allowed only on the designated dates. Chemical-coated, metallic and sharp string, known as manjha, is banned, and only approved kite sizes and cotton string are permitted.
Registration of kite makers began on September 5, and a dedicated Basant 2027 portal has been set up. Authorities have warned of penalties for making, transporting or using prohibited string.
Back after a long ban
Basant returned to Lahore from February 6 to 8, 2026, after a prolonged ban, under restrictions meant to prevent accidents. Officials have now been told to strengthen safety arrangements for 2027, while cultural events featuring traditional colours, local food and music are being considered for the Walled City.
