Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 in torrential rain at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday to draw level with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. City had suffered their first defeat of the season at Aston Villa earlier in the day, and Mikel Arteta's side seized the chance to close the three-point gap. Both teams now have 21 points after eight games.
Arsenal went ahead in the seventh minute when Martin Odegaard's corner caused chaos in the Everton box and Ezri Konsa bundled in from a yard out for his first goal for the club. It was Arsenal's first set-piece goal since May. In the 68th minute, Ben White, making his 200th appearance for the club, crossed for Gabriel, playing his 200th Premier League match, to head in the second.
"We are champions and to be champions you've got to win games consistently," Konsa said.
At Stamford Bridge, Tottenham beat fourth-placed Chelsea 2-0 for only their second league win there in 36 years. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, on his first league start, punched a corner into his own net in the 77th minute, Cole Palmer was sent off for a second yellow card three minutes later, and Mathys Tel sealed the win in the 87th with a surging solo run and low finish. Elsewhere, Fulham beat Coventry City 1-0.
