Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital by an emergency medical team on Friday after collapsing during training, the club said. The 40-year-old was taking a session with Bayern's reserve team and is now undergoing thorough examinations.

Kompany had missed training and a press conference on Tuesday before Bayern's Champions League draw with Arsenal. After that match he said he had caught "a pretty nasty virus" the previous week and had not listened to his body.

Sporting director Max Eberl said the coach's health was the club's top priority and that he would get all the time he needs to recover, with his coaching staff taking over his duties. Bundesliga leaders Bayern visit third-placed Freiburg on Saturday.

The former Manchester City captain took charge of Bayern in 2024 and won the Bundesliga title in each of his first two seasons. Under him, Bayern have won 57 and lost three of 74 league games.
