The United Nations General Assembly, acting alongside the Security Council, has elected five members of the International Court of Justice. After three balloting rounds, Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud of Jordan and Phoebe N. Okowa of Kenya were re-elected, while Dapo Akande of the United Kingdom, François Alabrune of France and Rena Lee of Singapore were newly elected, according to the official UN meeting coverage.
Their nine-year terms begin on February 6, 2027. The three newly elected judges will replace Ronny Abraham of France, Dalveer Bhandari of India and Leonardo Nemer Caldeira Brant of Brazil, whose terms expire on February 5, 2027.
The court has 15 judges and elects five seats every three years. The court's president recently told the General Assembly that 24 contentious cases are pending, covering territorial disputes, human rights and treaty interpretation.
