The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has expanded its support for women and girls across Afghanistan, covering healthcare, cash assistance, vocational training and economic empowerment programmes.
In a report titled "Afghanistan: Supporting Women and Girls to Thrive Despite Challenges", the organisation said its work focuses on improving maternal health, tackling malnutrition and creating income opportunities for vulnerable women.
According to the report, the ICRC works with the Afghan Red Crescent Society to give pregnant and breastfeeding women six months of cash assistance and nutrition advice. In 2026 the programme reached 1,400 women in four provinces.
The organisation also supports 47 Afghan Red Crescent health centres, which provided more than 800,000 outpatient consultations for women between June 2025 and July 2026. These included more than 980 deliveries, 111,000 antenatal check-ups and 39,000 postnatal check-ups.
