Chinese automaker Geely has unveiled an ultra-fast electric-vehicle charging system that it says can charge a compatible vehicle from 10% to 70% in 4.5 minutes under normal ambient temperatures.
Reuters reported that the system combines 2.2-megawatt charging infrastructure with a new high-rate battery. Geely says the same setup can take a battery from 10% to 97% in about eight minutes and 40 seconds.
The company also introduced a next-generation EV battery and an upgraded Galaxy E5 electric SUV. Competition in China’s EV market is increasingly focused on charging speed, driving range and intelligent-driving technology as Geely, BYD and other manufacturers compete for buyers.
The charging times are performance claims from Geely. Real-world charging speeds can vary with vehicle compatibility, battery condition, temperature, charging-station capability and local power infrastructure.
