Taipei — Margalla News: The United States "very much" understands Taiwan's defence needs and the severe military threat it faces from China, Taiwan Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi has said.
Reuters reported that the remarks came after a Washington summit between the US and Chinese leaders.
Taiwan views US security cooperation and arms sales as central to its ability to defend itself. Reuters reported earlier this week that a new US arms package worth roughly $14 billion has been delayed for several months.
China claims Taiwan as its territory and opposes US arms sales to the island, while Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claim.
Chen's description of the military threat reflects the Taiwanese government's position. The final approval and delivery timeline for the pending arms package remains unclear.
