Montreal — American rider Brandon McNulty won the elite men’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships on September 27, ending a 33-year title drought for the United States in the event.
Reuters reported that the 28-year-old made his decisive move with about 32 kilometres remaining and crossed the line in six hours, 17 minutes and four seconds.
Australia’s Michael Matthews finished second and Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands took third.
The previous American male winner of the road race world title was Lance Armstrong in 1993. Greg LeMond had earlier won the event for the United States in 1983 and 1989.
The UCI lists the 2026 Road World Championships in Montreal as running from September 20 to 27, with the elite men’s road race held on the final day.
McNulty’s victory was widely described as a surprise result in a race featuring several leading contenders. Two-time defending champion Tadej Pogacar did not start after suffering an injury in a crash the previous month.
