A new cold-storage facility for fruit and meat has been inaugurated in Guzara district of Herat province after an investment of about $1.5 million.
The facility was built on roughly 4,000 square metres of land over six months and has capacity to store around 3,000 tonnes of produce and meat. Its operator said the capacity could be expanded if needed.
Storage charges for fresh fruit range from two to 10 afghanis per kilogram per month depending on the product and the length of storage. Local farmers welcomed the additional capacity, saying it can help preserve produce for longer and make supplies available beyond the immediate harvest period.
The Herat Chamber of Commerce and Investment also highlighted cold-storage infrastructure as important for producers and the domestic market in one of Afghanistan’s major fruit-growing provinces.
