Japan's 17-year-old Shin Ohashi broke the men's 200 metres breaststroke world record on his way to Asian Games gold. Reuters reported that Ohashi clocked 2:04.83 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in front of a home crowd.
The time eclipsed China's Qin Haiyang's previous world record of 2:05.48, set at the 2023 world championships in Fukuoka. Ohashi therefore lowered the mark by more than half a second while securing the gold medal for Japan.
Kazakhstan's Denis Petrashov finished second to take silver, while South Korea's Cho Sung Jae claimed bronze. Ohashi won by a clear margin over the rest of the field.
After the race, Ohashi said the world record had been his goal and thanked his supporters. He added that his next major target is to win a gold medal at the world championships.
