QUETTA: According to The Express Tribune, tremors from a 5.9-magnitude earthquake were felt on Saturday morning in Balochistan's Khuzdar district and the surrounding areas of Kalat and Surab.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded the quake at a depth of 25 kilometres, with its epicentre 48 kilometres northwest of Khuzdar.
The shaking was strong enough to send residents out of their homes into open spaces.
The district administration said there was no loss of life or property, but all relevant departments had been put on alert and the situation was being monitored. Officials urged the public to rely only on information from official sources.
The paper notes that a 4.0-magnitude quake hit Dalbandin in August, and a 5.3-magnitude tremor shook Islamabad and parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in July. Much of Pakistan lies near the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making seismic activity common.
