According to Geo News, Tauqeer Nazir, the prime suspect in the death of Multan orphan Waseem Abbas, was killed early on Wednesday in an alleged encounter with Punjab's Crime Control Department (CCD) near Bahawalpur. Police said he had escaped from the custody of Multan's DHA police station while on a four-day physical remand.
The police account
CCD District Officer Irfan Akbar said a police team tried to stop two men on a motorcycle near Bahawalpur's Northern Bypass, and the pair opened fire while trying to flee. Police claim Tauqeer was hit by bullets fired by his own accomplice, who escaped.
Police have not explained how or when a suspect on remand escaped custody, or how he reached Bahawalpur. He had reportedly been assaulted by lawyers during a court appearance a day earlier.
Waseem's story
Waseem, from Muzaffargarh, lived at an NGO-run orphanage and had been sent to work with Tauqeer about a week before his death to learn electrical work. Police say he wanted to leave because of alleged mistreatment, and when he fled, Tauqeer chased him by car in Multan's Royal Orchard housing society and ran him over. CCTV footage shows the boy running before being struck.
Police said initial investigations found no evidence that Waseem was involved in theft. A murder case was registered under Sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, and a second suspect, Amjad, remains at large. Waseem was buried in his ancestral village of Daultpur.
