Eight runs needed off the final over, two wickets lost in quick succession, and then Janith Liyanage cleared the rope off the penultimate ball. According to Al Jazeera, Sri Lanka beat England by two wickets in Rawalpindi on Thursday, completing the second-highest successful run chase in one-day international history.

Brook's record, Sri Lanka's win

Earlier, England captain Harry Brook made 202 off 116 balls, reaching his double century in just 114 deliveries for the fastest in ODI history. His innings carried England to 429-4, the first 400-plus ODI total in Pakistan. Joe Root's 69 made him the first England batter to reach 8,000 ODI runs.

Sri Lanka were 24-2 before Pavan Rathnayake and Avishka Fernando added 166 for the third wicket. Rathnayake made 130, while Fernando and Dasun Shanaka both fell for 97. A 133-run stand off just 79 balls between Rathnayake and Shanaka swung the match.

Liyanage's finishing blow

Paceman Josh Tongue took two wickets in the last over to raise the tension, but Liyanage kept his nerve, finishing on 61 not out off 27 balls to seal victory with a ball to spare. The record ODI chase still belongs to South Africa, who chased 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.

Pakistan up next

Pakistan, who have beaten both Sri Lanka and England in the tri-series, face England in Lahore on Sunday.
