Unidentified gunmen opened fire on police officers on their way to guard an anti-polio vaccination campaign in Mohmand district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing two officers at the scene and injuring a third.
According to police, the attack took place in the Dag Tamanzai area of Mohmand as the officers were heading to their security duties for the campaign. According to sources, the injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police said the area was cordoned off after the attack and a search operation was launched to arrest the attackers. There has been no confirmed information so far on who was behind the attack.
Pakistan is one of the two countries in the world where wild poliovirus is still present, and polio teams and the police guarding them have been targeted in several Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts in the past. Such attacks are seen as a persistent threat to child vaccination drives.
