A family displaced by drought and poverty in Herat is still living in a makeshift shelter about nine years after leaving Gulran district, according to an October 5 report by Amu TV. The report follows Zia Gul's family in the Karizak area of Herat city's 11th district.

Her husband is described as disabled, the children are young and the family says it cannot afford rent or permanent construction. Amu TV said more than 25 families are living in temporary shelters in the same area and residents report shortages of drinking water, electricity, health care and reliable work.

The account is a local human-interest report and does not by itself establish the scale or conditions of all displaced families across Herat province.
