Kharan Deputy Commissioner Munir Ahmed Soomro has been released safely nearly two weeks after he was abducted while travelling in Balochistan.
A senior Balochistan Home Department official and a close family member confirmed his safe return. Soomro was abducted on September 20 while travelling from Quetta to Kharan in a private vehicle.
Officials said armed men intercepted the vehicle in the Lajah area of Kharan district and abducted Soomro along with a friend, his driver and personal security guard. The driver and security guard were released about three days later, while Soomro remained in captivity.
Police and Frontier Corps personnel launched search operations after the abduction, while authorities also involved local tribal elders in efforts to secure his release. Dawn reported that negotiations involving tribal elders and the armed men helped secure his freedom.
Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed full details about the abductors' identities or the terms and circumstances surrounding the release.
