Khyber — Station House Officer Riaz Hussain Afridi of Malagori Police Station died after being critically wounded in an exchange of fire with alleged smugglers of non-customs-paid vehicles in Khyber district.
District Police Officer Waqar Ahmad said Afridi was seriously wounded during an operation against the alleged smugglers. He was taken to Peshawar for treatment but later died of his injuries.
Police said non-customs-paid vehicles were seized from the scene and a search operation was launched to arrest those involved.
Afridi's funeral prayer was held with state honours at Police Lines Khyber.
Current police and media accounts describe the incident as an armed clash with alleged smugglers. Authorities have not classified it as a terrorist attack.
