Kylian Mbappe struck twice at Camp Nou on Sunday to give Real Madrid a 2-1 Clasico victory over La Liga leaders Barcelona, cutting the gap between the two sides to three points.

The French forward put Madrid ahead before half-time. Raphinha equalised for the champions after the break, but Mbappe slotted home late to hand Barcelona their first domestic defeat of the season. Hansi Flick's side, who had won their first nine league games, have now lost twice in a row after a Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

For Jose Mourinho, back in charge of Real Madrid, it was a winning start in his first Clasico of this spell. "My team had an extraordinary game, very organised, good concentration, with courage to play out from the back against a team that presses you a lot," he said.

Barcelona midfielder Pedri admitted his side had not been at their best, particularly in the first half. "We wanted to win the Clasico in front of our fans, but the season is very long... a league is not won here," he said.

Playing without the suspended Vinicius Junior, Madrid have now won five straight games in all competitions, though they remain third behind Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. Barca had won six of the previous seven Clasicos under Flick, which made Sunday's subdued display all the more painful for the Catalans.
